The Light We Carry ~Michelle Obama

I’m not quite familiar with Michelle Obama but yes, I do know that she was the first lady at the White house when Barack Obama won the elections. As I read this book, I understood how much of her was because of her parents. The book spoke about her early childhood, friendships, marriage partnership, her parenting style, journey to becoming the first lady and also how she was parented.

My most favorite of these was how her parents raised her brother and her. Chapter 7: Meet my mom would be my most valuable take from this book. The book showcases how she made major decisions in her life and how she navigated her thoughts. The pandemic made it extremely hard for all of us and she beautifully scripts how she was able to break through

the helpless and lonely phases. The message she continuously conveys is that we are less alone, and more connected. How marriage is a partnership and where one partner would have to be the one making the sacrifices.

The book also narrates on the lines of – “Ladies you can have it all, but not at the same time.”
And this line pinches me, and so, because it is true. But then I did not want to hear it from Michelle Obama… It looks like she had it all!
But then she goes on to explain how her support systems – her mother, personal assistant, friends, husband and a host of other people in her life were the people who made it look like – Have it all. She speaks of sacrifices her family and she had to make in terms of life at the White house and more.

The book is a good read to be a better parent, friend, marriage partner and a better person with tools to handle different situations life puts you in. I’m also in extreme admiration for the parenting style of Michelle’s parents.
